Subaru USA launched a series of ad campaigns for the 2019 Subaru Forester highlighting safety as one of its themes. In the ad, ‘A Parent’s Imagination’, 3 parents staring closely imagine different crash scenarios due to the distracted driving by their teens. But, a 4th teenager, shown driving a Forester fitted with Driver Focus, a driving monitoring system, arrives home safely. The warning system kept her safe, alerting her whenever she is distracted.
Distracted Driving is a Major Cause of Crashes
Each day, roughly 9 people are killed and over 1,000 are injured in reported crashes that involve a distracted driver according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Around 9% of teenagers 15-19 years old who were involved in fatal crashes were reported to be distracted making them the largest age group among distracted drivers involved in deadly collisions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also monitors risky behavior among high school students through the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS). Its 2017 report indicated that 42% of teenage drivers monitored in a month sent text messages or email while behind the wheel.
Using Technology to Reduce Crashes and Collisions
New teenage drivers attract high insurance premiums because they are inexperienced. Distracted driving compounds the problem making young drivers at greater risk for crashes and accidents. Fortunately, there are several ways to lower insurance premiums and keep yourself and your vehicle safe on the road, including shopping around for the best provider, driver education, or car choice. A car with warning systems such as the Driver Focus of Subaru alert drivers when they take their eyes off the road or the steering wheel. These alarms may be in the form of voice reminders or beeping sounds urging the driver to act whether it is to hit the brakes or steer properly reducing the risk of accidents.
There are also advanced systems such as warning and emergency braking systems that tip off drivers if there is a danger of collision and in the absence of reactions, the brakes will be applied to avoid or reduce the chance of a crash. Other useful technologies that can assist distracted drivers include lane support system and blind spot monitoring.
Car ads not only demonstrate the capabilities of a vehicle or entice consumers to buy the latest model. When safety features are demonstrated, buyers take notice because these systems can help monitor their safety while on the road.
